I've tried to identify the "components" of a generic innovation process as best as I can. Many of these components will play a bigger or lesser role depending on context, but most of these components should be present. This is what I have so far (if you can think of any more, please add them):

+ A will.
+ A sense of urgency.
+ Availability of resources.
+ Energy/vitality/motivation.
+ Chaos.
+ Creativity.
+ Insight(data and information subtracted).
+ Ideas.
+ An idea collection system.
+ Information.
+ A strategic filter (an innovation strategy: against which selections are made from all the "good" ideas collected. Knowing what you won't do and why.)
+ A formal, written innovation/New Product Development process.
+ The creation of value.
+ Profits, which leads to a realization that innovation works, which in turn drives the will.





There is an excellent audio snippet at the Businessinnovation2005.com site regarding urgency. The speaker, John Hagel, makes reference to Asia, suggesting that the best way to create urgency in U.S. firms is to come and take a look at what's happening over here. Great stuff!

Necessity is still one mother of invention, such as the hugely sucessful redirection of German and Japanese military industrial complexes after ww2. Of couse, is still out of chaos, which you mention. Perhaps problem is discernimg interactions between listed elements. Perhaps innovatation is an elusive thing which we cannot seed or plant but must take wherever it is found to grow. Perhaps next year it will be last year's word in the business bible. I like innovation, I like this blog. Happy Christmas, Scottish Gordon.

Thanks for comments Hi C Liu Nee! Yes, necessity is the biggie, and I would place that right next to the urgency element. By the way, the last comment you made about the baton business was very interesting -- designing crowd control tools must be a fascinating job. Merry Christmas!
